Hw uno da do?(My Creole for the week!)
This week was by far the craziest week I have experienced in my mission! It started out normal, but Wednesday hit and BAM! so did the craziness!
Wednesday morning a man from our branch passed away, so we had to go to his wake that evening. What is a wake you ask?? A wake is where you meet at a home, they bring the dead body that has not been drained or cleaned in a coffin- a legit coffin- for everyone to look at, but wait...Belize is 210 degrees, so they place fans on the body to keep it cool so that it does not rot sooner than later. They serve you warm hot sandwiches and maybe if your lucky... warm water with cocoa powder mixed in it in that 210 degree weather! The wake lasts until at the earliest 2 am! It really is awkward...and everyone in the town comes! We sang a few Hymns and then lucky us...we have to be in by 8 pm! No breaking that rule for a wake! We got home and got in bed...then Sister Poche (po-shay) came in and told us Vanessa's sister passed away also :(. How grateful I am for american funerals!
Thursday we had Sports Night and Sister Magof and I went to walk with Marisela and Nayeli. While we were on the corner I saw two white people and I knew they were members. They came over and talked to us. Well...small world they were on a study abroad for BYU-I and the girl was Ade's roommate! Fun little connection here in Belize!
Friday we had to go help and set up the wake for Vanessa's sister. Their dad was so drunk and it was the saddest thing. He lives in a little shack across the way and a man went and locked him in. The doors were beaten down and he banged them. He then shoved his fingers through a little crack and RIPPED the door open! It was like a horror movie I am not even joking! This wake had one side of members, then one side of wasted people. Alcohol is awful and after seeing it throughout my mission...I will not touch it with a ten foot pole.
Saturday we had the blessing of 2 baptisms with Marisela and Nayeli! They got there on time, we took pictures and then the baptism started on time! They were so cute and it was such a beautiful experience to see them so excited about this new step in their lives. They shared their testimonies and they just talked about how happy they are and how they are so grateful for the Gospel in their lives. We were so proud of them for being on time and so happy! The challenge came on Sunday when they reached to church late and did not get confirmed. We are praying for this next Sunday so they can become members and receive the Holy Ghost. They are so great! My best friends down here! :)
We had to head out to Vanessa's sister's funeral right after the baptism. It was in the Catholic church and I am so grateful that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! The spirit was not present during the screaming, drums, apostate sacrament and chanting for eternal life. It was a very different experience and I am grateful for the knowledge we have!
Onto missionary work! We are working with a few families right now and they have great potential! We have been working hard to find news in between wakes and funeral, they are here and we are finding them one at a time! Homer Castillo is preparing to be baptized on the 30th of May with his girlfriend in the next sister's area. It will be great!
We met with a less active yesterday and when we got to her house it was complete turmoil! We took her out and she talked to us for 2 hours telling us all about her trials and problems. It was really cool to see how Sister Magoffin and I were used as instruments in the Lord's hands to help comfort her and show her that Heavenly Father is real and listens to her. There is no better feeling that knowing that the Holy Ghost helped you know what to say, how to say it and when and that was the miracle of yesterday! She cried non stop the first hour, but by the end of the second she was laughing and committed to read the Book of Mormon. She texted us a summary of what she read last night and she is hopefully starting the journey back!
Belize is so great and I love it so much! I am so grateful for every moment I get to spend here and the miracles I see everyday! Thank you so much for your love and support you give me each week! You guys are the best! I love you guys!
Bringin 'em Heaven as I glory in His name!
